Generative AI is beginning to reshape how the public discovers and consumes news. Amid these shifts, news organizations in Indonesia are facing new challenges: declining search traffic, increasing AI crawling activity, and difficult choices between maintaining visibility and protecting journalistic content.

The research report “AI Robot Blockers and Generative AI Affordances: Traffic Risks and Protection Strategies for Indonesian News Organisations” examines how these changes in the digital ecosystem are affecting Indonesian media. The study highlights the impact of generative AI features on news traffic, publishers’ bargaining position, and the readiness of media organizations to respond to content extraction practices by AI platforms.

Through data analysis, interviews, and observations of newsroom responses, the report also explores protection strategies adopted by media organizations that started from basic technical measures to broader collective approaches increasingly seen as necessary to sustain independent journalism.

Conducted between October and December 2025, the research was published in 2026 by Asosiasi Media Siber Indonesia (AMSI) together with the research team from Monash University, with support from International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM). This research summary is expected to serve as both a reflection point and an initial reference for media organizations, policymakers, and the public in understanding the major transformations currently taking place in Indonesia’s digital information ecosystem.(*)
