Kamis 18 Juni 2026
Indonesia's media landscape is rapidly evolving due to changing audience behavior, the growth of social media platforms, and the emergence of generative AI technologies. These developments present both opportunities and challenges for media organizations in maintaining audience engagement, productivity, and long-term sustainability. In response, the Indonesian Cyber Media Association (AMSI), through the Google AI Tools Program under the Growth Lab initiative, supported Indonesian media organizations in strengthening their capacity to adopt AI-powered tools and audience-centered journalism practices.
The program was implemented between August 2025 and March 2026 through three main activities: (1) a Training of Trainers (ToT) on Google AI Tools attended by 41 media professionals, (2) a newsroom fellowship program that enabled participants to transfer knowledge and implement AI tools within their organizations, and (3) a public showcasing event that facilitated peer learning and discussion on AI adoption in journalism.
The fellowship phase generated significant multiplier effects. A total of 40 media organizations conducted newsroom-level training activities, reaching 413 participants, including journalists, editors, media staff, students, and community partners. Participants applied tools such as Gemini, NotebookLM, Pinpoint, Google Trends, and verification tools to support research, content creation, audience engagement, and newsroom workflows. During the implementation period, participating media organizations produced 88 AI-assisted content outputs across various formats, including articles, infographics, and videos.
The program concluded with a Google AI Tools Showcasing event attended by 72 participants, providing a platform for media organizations to share experiences, challenges, and lessons learned from integrating AI into newsroom operations. Discussions highlighted that while AI can significantly improve efficiency and innovation, human editorial oversight, verification, and journalistic ethics remain essential.
Overall, the program successfully strengthened the capacity of Indonesian media organizations to adopt AI-supported journalism practices, improve productivity, and experiment with audience-focused digital content. Through its training and multiplier approach, the initiative contributed to building a more adaptive, innovative, and sustainable media ecosystem in Indonesia.(*)
